OECD official says culture of tax fraud played role in Greece debt crisis

(26 Oct 2011) An official from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said on Wednesday that tax evasion was a key factor behind Greece's debt crisis. "The tax gap, I don't know how much it is, but it is really big," said Pascal Saint-Amans, the head of the OECD's International Co-operation and Tax Competition Division. Saint-Amans was attending the fourth Meeting of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes in Paris. "A large part of the population just evaded. Why? Because some were accustomed to that and when you see your neighbour not paying taxes therefore you don't pay taxes," he added. Saint-Amans' comments came as European leaders attended an emergency summit in Brussels to find a comprehensive solution to the continent's increasingly unmanageable debt crisis. In particular, they're yet to agree on how to cut Greece's debt, which is set to top 180 percent of economic output next year.
